Why visit Queenstown?
Below are just some of the reasons to visit the Queenstown region at any time of year.
The history of Queenstown
For many years people have been drawn to the beautiful lake and alpine areas around Queenstown starting with early Maori who came in search of Pounamu (greenstone). European settlers followed with their sights set on fertile grazing land. They discovered a whole lot more when gold was found in the region’s waterways. When the gold rush hit the region in the 1860s, it marked the start of an ongoing international fascination with the Queenstown region.
Over 2 million visitors are drawn to Queenstown each year, including adventurers, filmmakers, wine enthusiasts, Hollywood and Bollywood stars and US Presidents to enjoy their own unforgettable travel experience. Visitors come to experience our unique scenery, search for adventure, seek out relaxation and rejuvenation, or to just breathe our pure mountain air.
